Ms Minnie Degawan

Minnie Degawan was a student activist in the 1980’s while studying B.S. Biology at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. 

In 1987 Minnie joined the Cordillera Peoples Alliance (CPA)- Metro Manila Chapter before eventually joining the regional office in Baguio City as education/information officer in 1989.  Minnie later on took on the role of Secretary General of the CPA and became exposed to international work at the WGIP and UNCED.  She was a member of the founding group of the International Alliance of the Indigenous/Tribal Peoples of the Tropical Forests (IAITPF), a global alliance of Indigenous Peoples. As a member of the IAITPF, she was involved in the different international processes related to forests, environment and indigenous peoples rights.  Her main area of involvement has been on the drafting process of the draft Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples – including facilitating preparatory meetings and caucuses between IPs and Asian governments.  In 1997, Minnie became the Executive Director of DINTEG, a legal resource center for Indigenous Peoples Rights in the Cordillera.
